Dentistry Sucks

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006 at 9:39 pm

After living here for nine months, I finally made an appointment and went to see a dentist today. Their office is right in the Crystal City tunnels behind my apartment and I’ve got insurance, so I really had no excuse for waiting this long, especially since I hadn’t seen one in five or six years.

And it’s a damn good thing I didn’t wait any longer. Apparently I’ve got a pretty wicked cavity in one of my molars that’s not far from needing a root canal, so I’m going back next week to take care of that and two other minor cavities. I also found out that I haven’t been brushing or flossing right, and my wisdom teeth should probably come out because, while they aren’t causing any problems now, they’ve been coming in crooked (I say “coming in” because they’ve been like halfway there for years). So maybe I’ll deal with that one soon, too, but I’d really rather not.

And then I went and bought some of that new non-alcohol mouth wash, and it had better work as good as they claim because oh my Jesus it tastes so much better than Listerine.

Google Maps

Google Maps

Apparently Google Maps pulls from more than one source, because these two come from TeleAtlas and NAVTEQ (click for the bigger version). I was looking for the Trader Joe’s in Alexandria and tried to figure out if I could get there without a car, which led to the smaller map in the window on the left. That one is the walking map provided by WMATA’s Trip Planner, while the bigger one is from the regular Google Maps site. I was trying to figure out the discrepancy in Tivoli Passage Alley, and wouldn’t have noticed the different sources otherwise.

Anyone know what’s going on there? I did a little looking on Google, but I don’t really care enough to devote much time to it. I can’t help but wonder, though, how many different places are ambiguous like this, and if it contributed to the three months I spent driving around this city with no idea where I was going.

Coke and Pepsi Bottles

Pepsi & Coke

Has anyone else ever noticed that Coke bottles are sort of curved like a sexy lady, and Pepsi bottles are kind of phallic?

Just for the record, I’m a Coke man.

Busy Weekend(ish)

Sunday, August 27th, 2006 at 5:46 pm

It’s been a rowdy rowdy tiring long weekend, and I’m glad I’ve got a couple hours of down time before the next one starts.

I woke up feeling like shit on Thursday, so I stayed home and slept pretty much all day until Fonny and BP got here. I was still pretty run-down Friday and Saturday - and even now, I don’t feel like I’m totally over it - but I was good enough to go out and stuff. We had a BBQ here on Friday, for Fotios’ Going-Away and Jasmyn’s birthday, and wound up with a ton of people. I’m still not sure where a lot of them came from, but it got pretty big pretty quick.

Fotios moved out yesterday, so I moved into his room and Matt started settling in a little bit. We went and saw Beerfest again last night, then hung out at Fado for a while. BP and Schmitty wandered off on their own when the rest of us called it a night, but they managed to find their way back here early this morning. BP and Fonny headed north around noon, and Schmitty just left a little while ago.

And, in a few hours, Darrin is stopping in for the night on his way to somewhere, which is why I say I’ve only got a few hours to myself. We’ve got a revolving door here at the RIT Hostel, and a lot of times I’m not even sure who’s on their way in.

Oh, That’s Better

J: You look a bit peckish. Actually, I’m not sure what that means.

Me: Hungry.

J: Oh. Well, you look like shit, then.

Beerfest! (a review)

On a scale from Club Dread to Super Troopers, I’d put Beerfest at an 8. It was pretty hilarious, but a lot of the dialogue in the first act was pretty bad, and they had a lot of cheese-for-the-sake-of-cheese later on. But, it also featured gratuitous toplessness, so it evened out. Plus, we went to Fado afterward, and that’s always good.

I had never been to an advanced screening before, so that was pretty cool. Apparently ytic.com gives away screening passes a lot, so I went and signed up for all of their contests.

I’m definitely willing to pay to see it a second time, and that’s exactly what I intend to do. I think we’ll be heading up to Gallery Place Friday night after BBQ and beer drinking, since Fonny and BP will be here.

Also, my t-shirts came in from Threadless and Oddica today, so that made me happy.

As far as evenings go, I can’t complain about this one.

What has two thumbs and gets to see an advance screening of Beerfest tomorrow?

Weekend in Review

Friday 11 hour drive home. That was fun. Pittsburgh, as it turns out, isn’t the quickest way to Buffalo.

Saturday Wedding: wedding-y. Sharon looked all fancy. Reception: rowdy. My cousins are fun, and my parents have loosened up a lot since I moved out.

Sunday Finished fixing the parents’ computer. Visited Grandma. Had lunch at DiBella’s with BP and Lucas. Drive home from there only took 7 hours, thank goodness.

Then I got home to find that Matt moved all his stuff into our house, but there’s a couch on the balcony so it’s OK.

The fact that Kate Hudson broke up with that guy from that band has been all over the news lately, which means that 40 million guys in America are thinking, “Now’s my chance to go for it!”

I know this for a fact, because that’s what I was just thinking.
