2007 Resolutions, Reviewed

Sunday, July 29th, 2007 at 1:20 pm

Holy crap, July’s almost over already! Wouldn’t you agree that this is a good time to review our resolutions for the year? I’ll start:

  1. Go to the gym: This one hasn’t gone that well. I did pretty good in March and April, but it fell apart when I went to SF in May and they closed the gym at the hotel, and then I moved when I got back and just fell out of the routine. But, I went down there yesterday and today, and I’m hoping to get it back into my routine this week.
  2. Spend less time just hanging out in the apartment: Since moving into the city, I’ve been going out way more than I ever used to. Check!
  3. Get a handle on my finances: Going OK.
  4. Be more positive about life in general: Ehhhh. So-so.
  5. Try brewing beer: Not yet. Like a novelist investigating their topic, I’ve spent a lot of time drinking beer.
  6. Do more personal projects: Haven’t had time, but I’ve got some ideas.

So, could be better. How’s your list been going?

2007 Resolutions Thus Far

Monday, January 1st, 2007 at 12:33 pm

Now that we’re a full twelve hours (and change) into the new year, I think it’s about time for a little self-evaluation with regards to resolutions.

  1. Go to the gym: It’s where I started my day.
  2. Spend less time just hanging out in the apartment: I’ve already been out of the apartment TWICE. I know some people (ahem, roommates) who aren’t even out of bed yet.
  3. Get a handle on my finances: Unless you count the bill payments I scheduled online last night (they’ll be processed in the next couple of days), I haven’t spent a dime. I DID go down to Olsson’s (second trip out of the apartment) looking for a Moleskine daily planner and the Little Miss Sunshine DVD, but they had neither so I’m still doing OK.
  4. Be more positive about life in general: I’m just bursting with joy this morning.
  5. Try brewing beer: Not yet. Maybe I’ll start small: “Try drinking beer.”
  6. Do more personal projects: I took care of a lot of little crap this morning - the kind of stuff that only takes ten minutes, but just keeps getting put off. I’ve also started plans for a big project that’s been percolating for a few weeks and combined all my little to-do lists of smaller projects, so I know what I’m up against.

Not so bad, eh? I think we can all agree that 2007 is already a strong contender for Best Year In The Second Half of This Decade So Far.

Five Months On

I was going to do this at the end of June, but I suppose now is as good a time as any to revisit New Year’s resolutions. Let’s review, shall we?

  • Spend more time in DC.
  • So far - a bit of a flop. I haven’t been in the District in weeks, and really, I’ve only been up there to hang out a few times now - our Cherry Blossom Fest picnic and St. Patrick’s Day are the only memorable days up there. Perhaps I’ll be more inclined to head up now that I’m so close to the Metro, but I’ve never been the type to just head into the city looking for something to do, so that seems unlikely. I’ll have to work on that.

  • Watch more movies, read more books.
  • So far, I’ve watched 60 movies this year, and read probably a dozen books, so I’d say this one is going well. Even so, I’d like to be doing more of both; I’ve had five Netflix discs sitting around for about a month, and finally watched one last night and another this afternoon. With people around all the time, I haven’t really had a chance to watch them. The same goes for books - I was reading more at the old place, but I haven’t as much since moving.

  • Do more side projects and write more.
  • Hasn’t really happened, but I’ve been doing some web work for a friend of a friend. My interest in techie-exploits has been waning, and honestly, I’m just not sure I was meant to be a geek. As for the writing bit: I would like to be doing more of it, but it just isn’t happening. Once in a while, I’ll sit down to write and just draw a blank. Other times, I have something to write, but not the inclination or time to do it. I think both of these have fallen by the wayside because I’ve become more socially involved down here since the beginning of the year; at that point, I hadn’t really gotten settled, but now, I’m always hanging out with people and don’t need to find other ways to keep myself busy.

  • Make more friends.
  • I’m not sure if this was a resolution that I just didn’t announce publicly, or if it came later, but it’s not been going as well as I’d like. I’ve been hanging out with some of the guys from work once in a while, and met some people through friends that were already here, but I’m still spending most of my time with RIT friends. And as much as I love them, there aren’t a lot of them, and I like meeting new people anyway.

  • Perennial “Seriously, I’m going to lose weight this year (and I mean it this time).”
  • Ummm…yeah.
